The Challenge
Every coil carries a little more zinc than the customer ordered, because the air knife is set by experience and erring high is safe. Published figures put over-coating on a continuous line at around 15 per cent of the coating metal consumed. At LME cash of $4,107 a tonne, that margin is metal you bought and gave away.
How It Works
- Reads and connects the source records named in the proposal.
- The desk predicts the coating weight the next coil will get from the line's own readings and recommends the air-knife setting that holds the ordered grade with the least zinc, coil by coil. The operator accepts or rejects every setpoint and the line's control loop is untouched. It never goes below the customer's minimum per face. A second model schedules skimming and sink-roll changes so less zinc leaves the bath as dross.
- Publishes a source-linked recommendation for CGL Line Superintendent approval and records the decision.
What It Removes
- Zinc given away on every coil
- A setpoint that never learns
- Dross nobody scheduled against
