Plan Backload and Sailings Against the Drilling Lookahead to load each boat to the plan
Plans supply base, vessel and backload against the drilling lookahead, so a sailing is loaded to the plan rather than to the last request that arrived.

The Challenge
Sodir Resource Report 2020 puts transport at about eight per cent of exploration well cost, which is the defensible size of the logistics pool on the NCS. OMV used Sandnessjoen as supply base and Bronnoysund as helicopter base on the Hoffmann well in May 2025, while its contracted NorSea bases are Dusavik, Kristiansund and Hammerfest, so the deepwater exploration footprint and the contracted base network are not the same. There is no public NCS figure for PSV round trip cost or for backload tonnage, so the engine sizes nothing and plans instead.
How It Works
- The engine takes the drilling and installation lookahead and derives the supply base, vessel and backload requirement week by week.
- It builds each sailing to that plan, including the return leg, and shows what is being carried and what is being left behind.
- It does not fix a vessel or issue a manifest; the Logistics Coordinator does, and the engine shows the cost and time consequence of a late change.
What It Removes
- Sailings loaded to the last request that arrived
- Backload planned only when the deck is full
- Base and vessel plans built apart from the drilling plan
Input Data RequirementsThe drilling and installation lookahead, vessel charter parties and movement logs, supply base inventory and laydown records, cargo requests and manifests, backload and waste records, and the well programme materials list.
Output FormatWeekly pack setting out each planned sailing, its load, its backload and the requests that did not make the plan.
“I would rather load a boat to next week's plan than to whoever shouted loudest yesterday.”
